Shark Ray Alley

30 January 2003

shark ray alleyWhether you agree with feeding fish in their natural environment or not, Shark Ray Alley off Ambergris Caye in Belize is without doubt, one of the most popular sites in the Caribbean where you can do this.

It came about when local fishermen stopped here to clean their catch before landing and dumped the guts over the side. This attracted nurse sharks and southern stingrays to the site, which in turn attracted underwater sightseers.

At only 8-10ft deep and part of the protected Hol Chan Marine Reserve, it is an essential part of any snorkel trip to Hol Chan and a great spot for a surface interval.

The sharks and rays appear as soon as they hear the engine of the boat approaching. Actual feeding is usual restricted to the tour guides, who have a thorough understanding of the animals' behavior. Snorkelers have the opportunity to get up close, feel the sandpaper-like texture of the skin of both sharks and rays and take their photos.

This is the Belize Academy of Diving's most popular snorkel trip. For more information or to book up your own visit to Shark Ray Alley or other snorkeling and diving trips, visit www.belize-academy-of-diving.com.
