Top 10 Dive Sites
20 February 2004
What
would your list of the top 10 dive sites in the world be?
The Full Circle Expedition, conceived by British dive journalist Monty Halls, had this list.
- Great white sharks, South Africa
- Aliwal Shoal, South Africa
- Lake Malawi
- Palau Archipelago
- Yap
- Great Barrier Reef
- Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand
- Galapagos Islands
- Blue Hole, Belize
- Little Bahamas Bank
During 2002, the expedition dived all 10 sites in a 3-month period and loved it so much that they’re going to do it again in 2003.
The Belize Academy of Diving was delighted to host the Full Circle team during their stay in Belize to dive the Great Blue Hole.
Jacques Cousteau made the Blue Hole famous in his 1970 Calypso expedition. It has a diameter of 1000 feet at the rim, and drops to a maximum depth of 412 feet. At 90 - 100 feet the sheer wall recedes and this is where the famous stalactites start. These are up to an impressive 3 feet in diameter and 20 feet in length. As a bonus, large sharks often accompany you on this dive.
